For fifteen years, “showing up in search” meant one thing: ranking a page in Google’s ten blue links. That is no longer the whole game. Answer boxes, voice assistants, and AI chat now sit between your customer and your website — and each one plays by slightly different rules.
At Digitifex we think about three overlapping disciplines: SEO, AEO, and GEO. Here is how they fit together.
SEO — ranking the link
Search Engine Optimization is still the foundation. It is the work of earning organic rankings for pages: technical health, relevant content, internal linking, and authority. When someone clicks a result and lands on your site, SEO got them there. It is not going away — every other layer is built on top of it.
AEO — winning the answer
Answer Engine Optimization targets the answer itself, not just the link. When Google shows a featured snippet, or a voice assistant reads a single response aloud, only one source wins. AEO structures your content — clear questions, concise extractable answers, and FAQ or HowTo schema — so that source is you.
The shift matters because more searches now end without a click. If you are not the extracted answer, you are invisible for those queries.
GEO — getting recommended by AI
Generative Engine Optimization is the newest layer. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews generate answers by synthesising many sources — and they increasingly name and recommend specific brands. GEO is the practice of building the authoritative, well-cited, consistent presence those models draw on, so your business is the one they mention.
You cannot control a language model, but you can strongly influence it: accurate content, third-party citations, and a coherent brand entity across the web.
How to win all three
- Fix the fundamentals. Technical SEO and genuinely useful content underpin everything.
- Structure for extraction. Answer real questions plainly and mark them up with schema.
- Build authority off-site. Reviews, mentions, and citations shape both rankings and AI recommendations.
- Measure beyond rankings. Track snippets, AI mentions, and — most importantly — leads and revenue.
The brands that treat SEO, AEO, and GEO as one connected strategy will own search as it becomes AI-first. Want a roadmap for your business? Get a free proposal.
